Gearing up for getting down / Shrine Circus in town this weekend

From yesterday's email bulletin. We're counting on you folks. Really. Click the link and read the whole thing and jump in with questions or whatever.

"Hello friendlies, we know we’ve been coming hard and fast with the bulletins lately, and we truly appreciate your understanding and support. Lots going on!

This one is a little different for us but just as important as any delivery of vegan donuts or new candy bar, believe that. We just found out about some jerky types coming to town next weekend and we're trying (along with Herbivore and IDA) to get as many folks as we can together to help with an outreach event. The circus is coming to town and most otherwise compassionate and caring folks don’t know about the abuses going on. Basically, we want to let people know that those lions and elephants don’t want to jump through flaming hoops and aren’t being treated well.

We'd like to get a ton of you folks out there with us to hand out information to circus-goers. This is going to be a family friendly educational outreach event, not one of your more marchy, chanty, sign hoisting type affairs. Bring the kids! We want to show that Portland doesn’t want cruelty as entertainment and the more of us that show up to demonstrate that, the less likely the circus will be back next year.

Take a gander at these details...."

Closet sale!

More Craigslist pimping for our friends.

"I'm going to give 20% of whatever I make off my clothes to Sea Shepherd (I expect to make at least a few hundred. I have a lot of shit, and since I can't work, now is the perfect time to clean house). It's not mentioned in the ad because a lot of CLers (at least in the Rants & Raves section), even in Portland, are very anti-AR.

It's kind of an open-closet sale, the kind where people make an appointment, come in, browse and try on my stuff.. and in the case of your readers, drink tea/coffee and eat vegan snacks and pet my cat."

Josh Harper Update

"We heard from Josh today- he gets one 15-min call per week while in "the hole" (aka "special housing"). He's been given paperwork stating their reasoning for putting him there- the Bureau of Prisons is accusing him of being a "threat" and a "domestic terrorist", using as evidence against him a vague response he gave to a small skate/dumpstering zine questionnaire (something to the effect of: go at them, with all you've got), and possession of copies of No Compromise and Green Anarchy magazines. He's also been informed that the FBI is interested in going to question him, which is (of course) a waste of a trip for them.

We don't know what will happen now, and considering that new charges could be brought against Josh we can't discuss many details (not that we know many at the moment)."

Shriner Circus coming

Ok, so the Shriner Circus is coming to town on March 31st and April 1st. We're going to try and see what's going on with protests and such, and maybe we can all get together and make it all big and powerful and stuff. I mean, geez, most people should be able to see how circuses are fucked and unnecessary, right?

For now, you can do what I just did while walking to work. There are tons of circus fliers around, posted illegally on telephone poles and such. Tear those fuckers down. Sadly, lots of local businesses have them in their windows too. Might be a nice opportunity to ask the shop-keep to take them down or at least let you put up some anti-circus info up. We have a stack of PETA circus stuff here you can have. (we know, you hate PETA, but it's some free literature, so...)

Ok troops. Get mad and get to work.

ps. Also, some places have piles of free tickets for kids lying around. Not saying you should do anything with those or anything, but they do fit nicely in ones pocket and then into a recycling bin.

They are looking for volunteers to help pass out information and such. From my understanding, they don't have many volunteers lined up. So you may want to post something encouraging people to go down and help out. They are meeting at 11am to set up, but I'm sure they would welcome volunteers throughout the day. I don't know the exact location of the table, but it will be in the south Park blocks. People could also contact Matt. I think this is his contact information: matt@idausa.org, 503-249-9996 Ext. 2."

"Join Vegan and Vegetarian Students at PSU for our first social event: Vegan "Cake or Death?" Saturday, March 10 from 6-10 pm in the Multicultural Center on the 2nd floor of the Smith Memorial Student Union at PSU. This event combines great food (vegan cakes/pizza) with great comedy (the amazing British comedian Eddie Izzard).

At 6:00 we'll be bringing out the vegan cakes for a potluck/bake sale. It's a potluck, so we encourage people to bring vegan cakes or other vegan desserts. We are supposed to charge at least a small donation, however, for any cake eaten by the public, due to some arcane PSU health code. So it's also a bake sale. We haven't decided what to do with the money yet, but it will probably go to a Farm Sanctuary or to fund more club events. We will also be offering vegan pizza from Hot Lips.

Then at 7:00 we'll be showing Eddie Izzard's brilliant comedy special "Dress to Kill." It's really hard to explain Eddie Izzard - he describes himself as an "executive transvestite" and does really great impersonations of both squirrels and Scooby Doo, but spends most of this 2 hour special making history hilarious. Just trust us - you need to see this special. At least to understand what "Cake or Death?" is all about."
