Elephants are so vain.

"Awareness can be tested by studying whether the animal recognizes itself in a mirror. Only humans, apes and, more recently, dolphins, have been shown to recognize that the image in the mirror is of themselves.

Now, in The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers report that an Asian elephant has passed the mirror self-recognition test."

Still need a Halloween costume?

Our friend, Lauren, has some nice used costumes she wants to donate to sell to benefit the SHAC7's commissary fund, so if you still need a costume, please come here and get them. These clothes weren't cheap, so the prices are fair. But if it's getting closer to Halloween, the prices may get flexible. Also, Lauren said if you wanted to return any costumes after Halloween, she'd refund $10 out of her own pocket and donate it.

Dresses, left to right:

Frilly, sparkly 80s dress with tulle underskirt- size medium. Halloween is a nice
day for a white wedding. - $25

Fur Free Friday

Just a reminder to plan ahead. Take the day off or work and plan to hit the streets. Here's a note from IDA:

"Mark your calendar for the annual Fur Free Friday march! Starting (and ending) at Schumacher Furs, IDA will host a peaceful, police-escorted anti-fur march in the streets of downtown Portland, which will pass all the downtown stores that sell fur.

This Fur Free Friday marks the one-year anniversary of highly publicized, weekly demonstrations outside the Schumacher Fur Store.

What: Fur Free Friday march
When: Friday, November 24th - meet at 11:30 am - March begins promptly at noon
Where: Corner of SW 9th and SW Morrison, downtown Portland

After the march, activists can join IDA in a Fur-Free Party on the sidewalk outside Schumachers--complete with vegan cake--to celebrate this hugely successful, ongoing anti-fur campaign.

And then come back to Schumachers, 811 SW Morrison, every Saturday from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. for our weekly outreach!

For more information contact the NW IDA office at 503-249-9996 or email connie@idausa.org. Also pick up a copy of the latest issue of Herbivore Magazine (www.herbivoremagazine.com) to read "Those Meddling Kids: Portland activists give furrier the what for" by IDA's Northwest Coordinator Matt Rossell, who once worked undercover at an Oregon fur farm."

Thank yous.

Just wanted to say thanks to the few of you who showed up for benefit movie night last night. And thanks to The Artistery for hosting it and not charging us the full amount. Managed to raise $110 for the SHAC7 commissary fund.

And, in other SHAC7 news, we've received word that they will be having to turn themselves in on November 16th to wherever they are going. Josh is going to Sheridan, OR, not sure about everybody else. And in a major bit of shitty news, it looks like they'll all be going to a medium security facility, instead of the minimum or low security as everyone had expected. That "terrorism" labels works wonders. Now they'll have to be in with violent offenders and have far more restrictions on their lives and visitation priveledges.

Have you written a letter yet? Made a donation? Hmmm?

so, i was wondering if any of you might be into DV filmmaking or video work because i'm in this documentary filmmaking class right now, and wanted to ask if anyone has any equipment you wouldn't mind a very responsible person like myself borrowing for a little while.

i guess the main things i need are any external mics for interviewing people and any pointers on easy/cheap lighting equipment/tricks. i have a camera, tripod, and editing software on our computer. that's about it.

i'm taking an extra two day class in the middle of it to learn final cut pro, and i'm confidant i'll pick it up okay, but i'm totally ignorant about the whole process, and it looks like the documentary class is too fast to really get into everything by the time we need to actually start filming and stuff, so if there are any pointers you can tell me, it will be very appreciated.

thanks for listening everybody.

Bidding War....Catskill Game Farm

"The Catskill Game Farm in Upstate NY has closed it's doors after 73 years of business. This has always been a shady operation, and on THIS Wednesday (10/18), the animals who live there- rhinos, zebras, various exotic birds, monkeys, lemurs, deer, guinea pigs- will be auctioned off to the highest bidder. This means canned hunts, roadside "zoos", slaughterhouses, and other horrors.

These beautiful animals, some of which are on the endangered species list, have sacrificed enough for the sake of human entertainment. A dedicated group of animal welfare activists is doing what they can to try to buy some of the animals at auction. It seems like a futile effort (1 rhino can get up to $60,000), but they can try to save some animals, and that's better than none. If they succeed, they will need to secure legitimate housing for these animals.

Three things you can do:

1. Donate money to help buy animals.
2. Notify Coalition for Catskill Game Farm Animals of any sanctuaries you know of that can accept more animals (get in touch with CfCGFA first, to coordinate)
3. REPOST THIS MESSAGE!
